North Devon Cancer Care Car Service
The North Devon Cancer Care Car Service commenced operations in December 1997. The service helps cancer patients in North Devon and Torridge District areas, who must travel to Exeter for radiotherapy. Many would otherwise have to stay in the hospital hostel due to a shortfall in the current health service transport provision. The joint venture is between Go North Devon and the North Devon Cancer Care Centre Trust. The Trust provides the funding to enable GND to employ drivers, operate a vehicle and provide the co-ordination of this vital service.
The service is run from Monday to Friday in the morning for the North Devon District area and in the afternoon for the Torridge District area.
After an initial visit to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital Wonford for assessment, patients are then referred to GND if they have transport problems, for
their treatment. GND is unable to take self referrals from
patients, as the staff at RD and E Wonford have to adhere
to strict timetables and slots in the day when
patients can receive their treatment.
